THE STANDS

This page presents our stands collection made by Gabriel Viardot in the second half of the 19th century and inspired by the Chinese incense tables.  They were risen on curved feet and leaned on circular or square bases called tuo ni (litt. keeping the feet far from the mud). Viardot was inspired by them to create his stands but makes disapear the base that he replaces by one or more struts.

Stool

With a shape made up of curves and counter-curves, this stool is strongly influenced by the Chinese incense tables.  Consisting of three shelves brought together with the four feet, this little piece has a completely original profile, with a narrowing in the upper part. The upper shelf is the smallest.  The middle is decorated with latticed panels, just like the lower table. The feet are trimmed with gilded bronze ornaments, also influenced by Japanese bronzes. The completely wooden parts are engraved with scrolls, like the center of the middle shelf whose engraving adopts a scalloped profile

Small square stand

Pedestal in moldered, carved and stained sycamore. The square-section top rests on four moving legs joined by a tablet with openwork Chinese motifs. The apron takes up the Far Eastern decorative repertoire.

Pair of stands with lion's heads

The apron is sculpted, with an openwork decoration of stylized Chinese inspired motifs. The stiles are highlighted by gilded bronze lions’ heads, resting on four curved legs connected by a sculpted and perforated stretcher.

Beautiful square stand with a coiling dragon

It is composed of a square shelf with a sculpted decor of abstract geometrical motifs typical of the Asian art. The openwork base receives a beautiful coiled dragon in gilt bronze with a remarkable carving. The square bottom with steps rests on four feet.
