Shelf cabinet with dragon and heron

This cabinet with shelves is signed by the Parisian cabinetmaker Gabriel Viardot and has a rich japanese style decoration : dragon, heron and turtle in bronze, inlaid ivory, bone and mother of pearl decorated with flowering branches. It opens with three doors and a drawer.
It is surmounted by an important Foo dog in polished varnished bronze, which is one of Gabriel Viardot’s trademarks.
Its asymmetrical construction is characteristic of the creations of the Parisian cabinetmaker. The composition thus alternates solid elements and empty spaces. The central leaf is adorned with a carved and inlaid mother-of-pearl panel from Tonkin.
The most outstanding decorative element of this cabinet is a Foo dog crowning the piece of furniture. To the right of the cabinet, supporting a tablet, a crane resting on the back of a turtle is also made out of gilt bronze as the sinuous dragon located in the lower part of the furniture. These are, just like the winding base, often present on the furnitures by Gabriel Viardot.

Shelf unit with mother-of-pearls inlay

Its asymmetrical construction and its style inspired by the Japanese art are characteristic of the creations of the Parisian cabinetmaker.

The composition alternates solid elements and empty spaces. The lower part of the furniture opens by three doors adorned with a Japanese inspired decoration in a light relief and mother-of-pearls inlay, and by three drawers decorated with geometric scrolls. The left part, is slightly set back from the rest of the furniture. We find the same decoration on the two doors on the upper part surmounted by a pediment forming a pagoda above a geometric scrolls frieze. The right part is this time set back from the rest of the upper part composition but also lower. It forms shelves pu in a random way under an architectural decoration.

Japanese cabinet "Circus games"

This cabinet signed by Gabriel Viardot is truly a rare perfection of workmanship. The décor of this cabinet, directly inspired by the Far East, is of a great wealth. This cabinet is made up of a lower part closed by double doors. These are formed by two panels decorated with lacquer and bone of rare quality. Of Japanese origin, they depict two men engaged in circus games. One plays with several tops while the other plays the shamisen while holding a tree bird balanced on his forehead.

The upper part of the piece is made up of different shelves placed asymmetrically, a main characteristic of Japanese pieces. One of these shelves is supported by a bronze crane mounted on a tortoise. This is a pattern we find frequently on furniture by Gabriel Viardot. Finally, a small section is closed by a door decorated with two Japanese made in low relief bronze.

Japanese display case with chimera feet

This beautiful display case was made circa 1880-1890 by the famous French furniture maker from the late 19th century, Gabriel Viardot (1830-1904), as indicates the signature.
The display part can be opened with a glass door and shows three shelves on a red velvet background. Its pediment taking the shape of a pagoda roof is adorned with polished varnished bronze chimera, frequent element on the Viardot’s production. The furniture, made with tinted sycamore is adorned with a delicate decoration of inlaid Tonkin mother-of-pearl forming cherry tree branches with animals and insects. The belt canbe opened as a drawer but can also be transformed into a writing desk by taking down the facade. The whole is supported by two sculpted chimera feet and lays on a base with four small feet..

Shelving unit with dragon decoration and mother of pearl marquetry

The furniture maker creates here an asymetrical shelving unit of which the shape and decoration are inspired by the Far-East esthetic. The top of the furniture reminds indeed of the pagoda roof, while we find here and there the dragon motif in polished varnished bronze and the geometric scrolls decoration. On each of the three doors, Gabriel Viardot chose to inlay a decor made of Tonkin mother of pearls. We can especially see on the superior door, an exceptional reproduction of a typical village, or a branch of cherry tree with flowers on one of the lower door. The detail precision goes to the sides of the furniture which present an elegant chiseled decoration depicting bamboo leaves.

Large Japanese cabinet with Foo dog

This exceptional Foo dog cabinet is signed by Gabriel Viardot. Its asymmetrical construction is characteristic of the creations of the Parisian cabinetmaker. The composition alternates solid elements and empty spaces. The central door is decorated with a panel inlaid with ivory, tinted bone and wood composing a bouquet of flowers. This panel probably came from a Japanese furniture piece and was reused, a common practice by Gabriel Viardot, to make this piece. This was also the case for the element adorning the left panel. A frightening character, of a rare plastic quality, is produced in ivory and mother of pearl. The decorative element the most exceptional of this cabinet is a Fu dog crowning the piece. To the right of the piece, supported by a shelf, a crane resting on the back of a tortoise is also made in gilded bronze just like the sinuous dragon located in the lower part of the piece. One also finds small elements of latticed gilded bronze decorated in their center with a pinecone in this piece. These are, like the scrolled feet, elements frequently present on the pieces of Gabriel Viardot.
