Chinese stand

Circa 1880-1890

This stand is quite typical of the “Chinese-Japanese kind furniture” by its shapes and its opened railings. Circa 1880-1890, the  production of Viardot becomes less exuberant and mark the return toward symetry and straight lines.

Cabinet with shelves and a Fô dog

Late 19th century

This cabinet with shelves has a rich Far EAst inspired decoration : bronze dragons, heron and turtle inlaid with ivory, bones and mother-of-pearl flowered branches decoration. It is surmounted by an important Fô dog made of polished varnished bronze, which is one of Viardot’s characteristic. 

Japanese shelving unit

This cabinet with shelves is adorned with a rich Far East decoration : dragon and Fô dog of polished varnished bronze, ivory, bones and mother-of-pearl inlay, depicting floral and birds decoration.

Large Japanese cabinet with Foo dog

Circa 1880-1890

This exceptional Foo dog cabinet is signed by Gabriel Viardot. Its asymmetrical construction is characteristic of the creations of the Parisian cabinetmaker. The composition alternates solid elements and empty spaces.

This cabinet signed by Gabriel Viardot is really of a rare perfection making. Its decoration, directly inspired by the Far East is really rich.

Display furniture with mother-of-pearl inlaid decoration

Late 19th century

This display furniture is quite exceptional. Its symetrical construction and its style inspired by the Japanese art are typical of the Parisian furniture maker.

Japanese desk with mother-of-pearl decoration and its chair

Late 19th century

The slab, richly sculpted and engraved with japanese motif, is adorned with a mother-of-pearl inlay decoration. It opens with two sliding side slabs, five drawers and lays on claws feet. Its chair has the same feet and an opened backrest with on its center a mother-of-pearl motif. 

Display cabinet

Circa 1880-1890

With a sculpted and openwork decoration, its pediment is decorated with a dragon in high relief. It opens on the facade through a glass door on five shelves, three of which are arranged in a staggered pattern, one of which is supported by a dragon.

Small square stand

Circa 1880-1890

Chinese stand of moulded, sculpted and tainted wood. The square slab stands on four curved feet reunited by a shelf with Chinese motif. The belt takes the same decorative repertoire.

Sculpted wood writing desk with floral and brids decoration and mother-of-pearl inlays and decorative bronzes.

helving unit with dragon decoration and mother of pearl marquetry

An asymetrical shelving unit of which the shape and decoration are inspired by the Far-East esthetic. The top of the furniture reminds indeed of the pagoda roof, while we find here and there the dragon motif in polished varnished bronze and the geometric scrolls decoration.

Nested tables

Circa 1880-1890

This series of four nesting tables prefectly illustrates the Viardot’s production of Livingroom small furniture, offering us here a beautiful example with  aesthetic appearance.

Display case with chimera feet

Circa 1880-1890

This beautiful display case can be opened with a glass door and shows three shelves on a red velvet background. Its pediment taking the shape of a pagoda roof is adorned with polished varnished bronze chimera, frequent element on the Viardot’s production. .

Writing desk with a Buddhist monk

1886

This beautiful writing desk is signed by Gabriel Viardot and is dated 1886. The presence of a date on one of Viardot’s furniture is relatively rare and deserves to be noticed and could be explained by  quality of this writing desk.

This furniture is typical of the Viardot’s production. The presence of bronze piece in high relief appeares as a signature for the furniture maker.

This small table with degrees is quite characteristic of Gabriel Viardot’s work. His gilt bronze dragons and the openwork wooden friezez inpired by the Far East make it a splendid witness of the “Japonisme” vogue in France in the 1880’s-1890’s.

This mirror is as imbued with Japanese art and Asian art, very in vogue in the end of the 19th century.

The attribution of this bedroom furniture is allowed because of the high making quality of the furniture and by stylistic comparison to other signed pieces of drawn in the archives sketchbook.

This wardrobe shows a large and beautiful mother-of-pearl Japanese decoration inlaid on its two doors.

Clock shaped as a pagoda with a Foo dog bronze

Circa 1880-1890

He creates here a beautiful clock taking the shape of an Japanese architecture with a pagoda roof, on the mount of which a slendid bronze dragon is wound. On the right a very big Foo dog also in bronze seems to be going down the roof.
